Best Trauma-Informed Parenting Tips: What Works for You?

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start a discussion on the best trauma-informed strategies you've found helpful when parenting a child who’s experienced trauma. As we all know, traditional parenting methods don’t always work with trauma-impacted kids, so finding what helps our children feel safe and supported is key.

Here are a few strategies I’ve found useful:

  1. Safety First: Creating a calm, predictable environment helps children feel secure, which is critical for healing.

  2. Empathy Over Punishment: Instead of reacting to misbehavior with punishment, try to understand the "why" behind their behavior. A calm, empathetic response can do wonders.

An attachment wound or disruption can deeply affect a child because secure attachment is the foundation for feeling safe, understood, and cared for. When that bond is interrupted—through inconsistency, absence, or emotional unavailability—the child may struggle to trust others or feel secure in relationships. Without that sense of safety, the brain stays on “alert,” making it harder to manage big emotions, calm down after stress, or express needs in healthy ways. This can show up as challenging behaviors, outbursts, withdrawal, or difficulty with self-regulation, because the child’s nervous system is still searching for stability and reassurance.

Feeling loved is not possible until the feel safe.
