Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria
Have you ever heard of Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD)?
Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) isn't a diagnosis—it's a way some nervous systems respond to the feeling of rejection, criticism, or failure.
For a child with RSD, even a small correction or a simple "not this one" can feel much bigger than it does to others. What sounds like gentle feedback to you may feel like overwhelming rejection to them.
You might notice that:
A small mistake leads to a huge meltdown.
Being corrected feels unbearable.
Neutral comments are heard as criticism.
They become angry, argumentative, aggressive, or completely shut down and withdraw.
From the outside, these reactions can seem confusing or out of proportion. But from your child's perspective, their brain and body are responding as if they are in danger. When this happens, their nervous system quickly shifts into survival mode—fight, flight, freeze, or shut down. Thinking clearly, listening, and problem-solving become very difficult because their brain is focused on protection, not learning.
It's hard to parent a child who experiences RSD, and it's just as hard to be the child who feels this level of emotional pain.
The good news is that punishment or more criticism rarely helps. What these children need most is what every overwhelmed nervous system needs: felt safety, connection, and co-regulation. When they begin to feel safe again, their thinking brain can come back online, making it possible to learn, repair, and move forward.
Remember, the goal isn't to prevent every disappointment. The goal is to help your child experience disappointment while knowing they are still safe, loved, and accepted.
